For our stay in Council Bluffs, Iowa, midway through Plucky Survivors 2007, we spent the evening at another Harrah's hotel and riverboat casino. This one is not quite as luxe or as large as the one in North Kansas City that we found to be comparable in just about every capacity to some of the better hotels in Sin City (at significantly lower prices it should be added), but still very nice.
It’s located along the Missouri River smack dab in between downtown Council Bluffs and downtown Omaha, Nebraska with a short drive to either locale. This is another situation where it could provide a fun option for those who may otherwise want to stay in a staid traditional hotel.
There are several restaurants including a well-stocked buffet, a steakhouse, and a couple of diners. For entertainment there is a big outdoor amphitheater that hosts regular concert series with people that may not be at the top of the charts but are definitely people you’ve heard of (Clint Black, BB King, Bonnie Raitt, and Pat Benatar are just a few examples). They also have a nice fitness center and are close to several golf courses if that’s your thing.
The casino is moored on the riverbank and is open 24 hours with no limits to how often you can go in our out. Gambling here is just like in Vegas with no loss limits or other inhibitors to blowing all of your vacation budget in a few hours of slot machine madness. All of the machines have ticket in/ticket out technology and the table games are what you’d expect in a casino.
Rick did pretty lousy in this casino but he’s not going to hold that against them.
The hotel rooms are pretty standard, with less of the plushy amenities than we found at the Harrah’s in North Kansas City, but still imminently comfortable and scrupulously maintained. The crisp white sheets and pillows were arranged on the bed "just so" and the Gilchrist and Soames bath amenities are a nice touch.
Prices are reasonable and the service was very friendly so what more could you want?
