While traveling Route 66 we took the opportunity to sample the regional donut delights at Mel-O-Cream, a place that made us want to visit mostly on the strength of the fact that their corporate website opens with Homer Simpson saying “Donuts… is there anything they can’t do?”

There are many throughout the Springfield region of Illinois and you can also get them at convenience stores and the like, but for the real deal you have to stop at a store and we visited the one in Lincoln.

The cream filled treats were heavenly even though we were visiting late in the day when they weren’t as hot out of the oven fresh as we usually like. It’s hard to do things like compare donuts but of all the ones we sampled on our various trips, these are the ones we remember the best.
